These figures describe marketing claims. They do not prove that any listed product is illegal. Sellers often promote peak wattage, while provincial rules use rated or continuous output. A buyer needs the rated motor output and maximum assisted speed to assess a product against current provincial rules.

Median listed prices were $600 for products at or below 500W, $850 from 501W to 1,000W, and $1,799 above 1,000W. This is a descriptive comparison. It does not show that power caused the price difference.

Who Sets E-Bike Road Rules in Canada?

Canada no longer has an in-force federal power-assisted bicycle definition. Transport Canada says the former definition ceased to be in force on February 4, 2021. Provinces set road-use requirements.

Ontario currently uses a maximum motor output of 500W and a maximum assisted speed of 32 km/h. British Columbia also uses 500W and 32 km/h for a standard e-bike. Its light e-bike class has different limits.

Of the 628 campaign listings, 462 contained a usable advertised wattage. Every power percentage uses those 462 listings as the denominator. The analysis records the figure shown in the listing. It does not convert peak power to continuous power or classify an individual product as legal or illegal.

Limitations: This is a marketplace snapshot, not a census of every Canadian retailer. Seller claims and category labels can contain errors. Prices change. The price comparison is descriptive and does not establish causation.
