Only 23 percent of listings advertise a motor at 500W or less. The other 77 percent are marketed above the federal limit. Almost one in three, 31 percent, advertise more than 2,000W. The median advertised motor is 1,200W. That is 2.4 times the legal figure.
There is a catch that matters for buyers. Advertised wattage is usually peak power. The law measures continuous power. A bike listed at 1,000W peak may be 500W continuous and fully road-legal. Nothing on the listing tells you which one it means. So a careful buyer still cannot be sure what they can legally ride.
The road-legal choice is also the cheapest. Bikes at 500W or less cost 510 dollars at the median. Bikes above 1,000W cost 1,799 dollars. The market pushes buyers toward more power and more money at the same time.
The federal baseline is simple. A power-assisted bicycle has a motor of 500W or less, stops assisting at 32 km/h, and has working pedals. Ride one of those and you need no licence, plate, or insurance in most places. Go above the limit and the rules change by province.

The biggest lesson is simple. This category still rewards guidance. New shoppers do not need more choice. They need help understanding what is real, what is legal, and what is serviceable in Canada.

No brand dominates the dataset. We identified 67 brands, and the largest listing share belongs to Jasion at just 4.1%. That is not a winner-take-all market. It is a fragmented marketplace where visibility is spread across many weakly differentiated sellers.
