This is a keyword research study of 1,213 Canadian e-bike search queries. We pulled every query from Google Canada using Street Rides keyword research. Then we sorted them into 11 intent categories. The result is a complete map of what Canadians want to know before buying an electric bike.

An electric bike (e-bike) is a bicycle with a battery-powered motor that assists pedaling. Canada regulates e-bikes at the provincial level. The market has grown fast since 2020. Search demand now exceeds 1.9 million queries per month across all categories.

TL;DR: 5 Key Findings

  1. Brand and buying queries dominate. They account for 301 keywords and 1.78 million monthly searches. That is 93% of all search volume we tracked.
  2. Canadians search to buy, not to learn. The gap between brand searches (1.78M) and informational searches (~120K) is massive. This market is in a buying phase.
  3. Conversion kits are a stealth category. With 68 keywords and 39,520 monthly searches, DIY conversions represent serious demand that most retailers ignore.
  4. Legal questions remain a pain point. We found 106 law-related keywords. Provincial rules confuse buyers and slow down purchase decisions.
  5. AI Overviews reshape visibility. Four out of five e-bike queries now trigger Google AI Overviews. Traditional SEO rankings alone no longer guarantee clicks.

Brand Research Crushes Everything Else

The numbers tell a clear story. Brand and buying queries generate 1.78 million searches per month. Every other category combined accounts for roughly 128,500. That is a 14-to-1 ratio.

What does this mean? The Canadian e-bike market has moved past the awareness stage. Shoppers are not asking "what is an e-bike?" anymore. They search for specific brands. They compare models. They look for the best price at Costco (8,100 searches per month) or Canadian Tire.

What This Means for You

If you sell e-bikes: Canadians already know they want one. Your job is not to convince them e-bikes are good. Your job is to show up when they search for specific brands, models, and prices. Product pages and brand comparison content will outperform generic "why buy an e-bike" articles every time.

The Hidden Opportunities

Look at the categories below brand/buying. Types and styles (42,530 searches) and conversion kits (39,520 searches) compete for second place. This reveals two underserved audiences:

  • Style-specific shoppers. These 188 keywords cover fat tire bikes, folding e-bikes, electric dirt bikes, cargo bikes, and more. Each style attracts a distinct buyer profile.
  • DIY converters. Nearly 40,000 monthly searches focus on converting existing bicycles. These shoppers already own a bike they love. They want to add electric power without buying a whole new ride.

Battery and range questions (193 keywords, 26,480 searches) rank fourth. This is the top anxiety for new buyers. Range fear is to e-bikes what range anxiety is to electric cars.

Legal questions (106 keywords, 4,480 searches) sit lower in volume but carry outsized importance. A confused buyer is a delayed buyer. Every province has different speed limits, age requirements, and helmet laws. We built a complete provincial law guide to answer these questions in one place.

The Top Questions Canadians Ask About E-Bikes

We extracted 34 unique People Also Ask (PAA) questions from Google search results. We also found 38 question-format keywords with measurable search volume. We organized everything into 8 groups that follow the buyer decision process.

1. Is It Worth It? (Value Questions)

  • "Is it worth it to buy an e-bike?"
  • "What are the disadvantages of e-bikes?"
  • "What is the lifespan of an electric bike?"
  • "Are e-bike conversion kits worth it?"
  • "Is an e-bike better than a regular bike?"

Value questions come first in the buyer journey. Canadians want hard numbers before spending $1,500 to $5,000. The average e-bike on Amazon.ca costs $1,473. Commuters save $2,000 to $4,000 per year compared to car ownership costs. Our Canadian e-bike market report covers total cost of ownership in detail.

2. What Are the Rules? (Legal Questions)

  • "Are 750 watt e-bikes legal in Canada?"
  • "What are the rules for e-bikes in Canada?"
  • "Can you ride an e-bike on the sidewalk in Ontario?"
  • "What happens if you get caught on an electric bike?"

Legal confusion is the number one barrier for cautious buyers. The short answer: no license is required for e-bikes under 500W with a top assisted speed of 32 km/h. But rules vary by province. Ontario, BC, Quebec, and Alberta all have different regulations. We break down every rule in our province-by-province e-bike law guide.

3. How Far and How Long? (Battery and Range)

  • "How far will an e-bike go on a full charge?"
  • "How long do batteries on an e-bike last?"
  • "How much does it cost to replace the battery in an electric bike?"
  • "Is 500 miles a lot on an e-bike?"

Range anxiety drives these questions. Most e-bikes travel 40 to 100 km on a single charge. The exact distance depends on battery size, rider weight, terrain, and assist level. A full charge takes 4 to 6 hours. Replacement batteries cost $400 to $800 and last 500 to 1,000 charge cycles.

4. Can I Ride in Winter? (Weather Questions)

  • "Can e-bikes be used in winter?"
  • "How cold is too cold for an e-bike battery?"
  • "Can e-bikes be left in the cold?"
  • "How to store e-bike battery for winter"

This is a Canada-specific concern. Yes, you can ride in winter. Fat tire e-bikes handle snow well. But cold weather reduces battery range by 15% to 30%. Store your battery indoors when temperatures drop below minus 20 degrees Celsius. Many Canadian commuters ride year-round in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal.

5. Do I Need Insurance? (Protection Questions)

  • "Can an e-bike be insured?"
  • "What kind of insurance do I need for an e-bike?"
  • "Do you need insurance for your e-bike?"

No province currently requires e-bike insurance. But theft is a real problem. Some home insurance policies cover e-bike theft under personal property. Dedicated e-bike insurance costs $15 to $40 per month. We recommend a good U-lock, GPS tracker, and checking your home insurance policy before buying.

6. How Do I Choose? (Buying Guidance)

  • "What brand of e-bike is the best?"
  • "How do I choose the right e-bike for me?"
  • "How to decide what e-bike to buy?"
  • "What is the difference between 2000W and 3000W e-bike?"

Buying guidance questions carry strong commercial intent. These searchers are close to a purchase. The best Canadian e-bike brands include Biktrix (Saskatoon), Surface 604 (Vancouver), and Daymak (Toronto). We review the top options in our best e-bike brands in Canada guide. For what AI engines recommend, read our AI e-bike recommendations report.

7. Money Questions (Rebates, Taxes, and Costs)

  • "Are there any rebates for e-bikes?"
  • "Can I claim an e-bike on my taxes?"
  • "Can I really get a free e-bike?"
  • "Does Canada still offer EV rebates?"

Money questions spike every spring as riding season begins. Only PEI ($500), Yukon ($750), and BC (PST exemption) offer active e-bike incentives as of May 2026. There is no federal rebate. Full details on every active program are in our Canadian e-bike rebates guide.

8. Commuting Questions

  • "What is a good electric bike for commuting?"
  • "Should I get an e-bike to commute to work?"
  • "Which bike is best for daily commuting?"

Commuting is the top use case for Canadian e-bike buyers. Most riders commute 10 to 25 km each way. Anything under 30 km is comfortable on a single charge. Yes, you still get exercise. Studies show e-bike riders burn 75% of the calories that regular cyclists burn.

What the Search Data Reveals About Canadian Buyers

We found six patterns in the data that most e-bike brands overlook. Each one represents a gap between what Canadians search and what the industry delivers.

1. Costco Is a Major E-Bike Discovery Channel

"Costco electric bike" pulls 8,100 searches per month. That makes Costco the third-highest brand search term in Canada. Shoppers trust Costco for big purchases. They search there before they search dedicated e-bike retailers.

Insight: Costco searches (8,100/mo) outrank "best e-bike Canada" (2,400/mo) by 3.4x. Canadian buyers trust big-box retailers more than review sites for e-bike research.

2. Conversion Kits Rival Entire E-Bike Categories

"E-bike conversion kit" generates 4,400 monthly searches. Total conversion-related searches reach 39,520 per month. Compare that to 42,530 searches across all e-bike type keywords. Nearly half of interested Canadians consider converting a regular bike instead of buying new.

Insight: Conversion kit searches (39,520/mo) nearly match all e-bike type searches combined (42,530/mo). The "build your own" market is almost as large as the "buy new" market.

3. Canadians Do Not Abandon E-Bikes in Winter

"Winter e-bike" and "e-bike in winter" combine for 420 monthly searches. Total winter-related queries reach 1,430 per month. Canadians want to ride year-round. They just need the right gear and guidance.

Insight: 1,430 monthly searches for winter e-bike riding prove this is not a summer-only market. Fat tire e-bikes (1,900 searches/mo) likely serve double duty as winter riders.

4. Insurance Confusion Is Widespread

"E-bike insurance" pulls 210 monthly searches. Province-specific queries like "e-bike insurance Ontario" add another 110. Across 56 insurance-related keywords, total volume reaches 1,840 per month. Canadians do not know if they need insurance, what it covers, or where to get it.

Insight: 1,840 monthly searches across 56 insurance keywords signal massive confusion. No single brand or resource owns this topic in Canada yet.

5. The Seniors Market Is Underserved

"E-bike for seniors" generates 480 monthly searches. Few brands create content or products for this audience. Seniors need step-through frames, lower seat heights, and stable handling. The demand exists. The supply does not.

Insight: 480 monthly searches for senior-specific e-bikes with almost zero brands targeting this group. This is an open opportunity for any retailer willing to serve older riders.

6. Fat Tire Dominates Style Searches

"Fat tire e-bike" leads all style searches at 1,900 per month. This matches what we found in our Amazon.ca market report. In that study, 36% of all e-bike listings featured fat tires. Canadian terrain and weather drive this preference.

Insight: Fat tire e-bikes own 1,900 searches/mo and 36% of Amazon.ca listings. No other style comes close. Canadian buyers want traction and stability over speed.

The AI Search Factor: What Google AI Overviews Show

Google now answers e-bike questions directly on the search results page. We tested five common Canadian e-bike queries. Four out of five triggered Google AI Overviews.

Which Queries Trigger AI Answers

We searched each query from a Canadian IP address in May 2026. Here is what we found.

Query AI Overview? What Google Shows
"are e-bikes worth it" Yes Cost-benefit summary with average prices and savings vs. car ownership
"how far can an e-bike go on one charge" Yes Range estimates (40-100 km) with factors that affect battery life
"e-bike laws Canada" Yes Province-by-province speed and power limits
"can you ride e-bike in winter" Yes Safety tips and tire recommendations for cold weather
"best e-bike Canada 2026" No Standard search results with product listings and review sites

Why This Matters for Buyers

Google AI Overviews give you a fast summary for informational questions. You get a quick answer about range, laws, and winter riding without clicking a single link. That saves time during early research.

But AI summaries pull from existing sources. They do not generate original analysis. When you read only the AI answer, you miss the methodology, the caveats, and the full picture.

Why Commercial Queries Stay AI-Free

"Best e-bike Canada 2026" did not trigger an AI Overview. Google avoids generating AI answers for purchase-intent queries. Product recommendations require hands-on testing and subjective judgment. Google does not want liability for steering buyers toward specific products.

This means your final buying decision still requires reading full reviews. AI answers help with research. They do not replace it.

What This Means for the E-Bike Industry

Brands that AI engines cite get discovered first. When Google pulls your data into an AI Overview, you reach searchers who never scroll past the first result. We track which brands AI engines recommend in our AI e-bike recommendations report.

The brands that publish original research, clear specifications, and factual guides are the ones AI engines trust. Marketing copy does not get cited. Data does.

Common Research Mistakes to Avoid
  • Skipping provincial laws. A legal e-bike in one province may not be legal in another. Always check before buying.
  • Ignoring total cost of ownership. Battery replacement costs $400 to $800 after 3 to 5 years. Factor this into your budget.
  • Buying based on brand name alone. Our market data shows 50% of Amazon.ca listings have no identifiable brand. Lesser-known brands often deliver equal performance at lower cost.
  • Assuming you cannot ride in winter. 1,430 monthly searches prove many Canadians ride year-round. Fat tires and proper preparation make winter riding safe.
